Enforcement Directorate Freezes Assets of Actor Shilpa Shetty and Raj Kundra in Money Laundering Probe

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has taken a significant step in its ongoing investigation, attaching assets worth a whopping Rs 98 crore belonging to Bollywood actor Shilpa Shetty and her husband, Raj Kundra. Among the assets frozen are a luxurious bungalow in Pune and equity shares, marking a pivotal moment in the probe into alleged money laundering activities.

The case under scrutiny revolves around the fraudulent exploitation of investor funds through the utilization of Bitcoins, a digital currency. The ED’s actions are rooted in the suspicion that the couple was involved in cheating investors by luring them with promises of exorbitant returns, a scheme purportedly orchestrated through a company named Variable Tech Pte Ltd.

According to the ED, the seized properties encompass a residential flat in Juhu, Mumbai, registered in Shetty’s name, alongside a residential bungalow in Pune and equity shares linked to Kundra. A provisional attachment order has been issued under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), marking a decisive move by the federal agency to clamp down on alleged financial malfeasance.

The genesis of the money laundering case can be traced back to FIRs filed by both the Maharashtra Police and Delhi Police against the aforementioned company and individuals associated with it. The accused allegedly amassed substantial sums from unsuspecting investors, leveraging false promises of hefty returns, thereby perpetrating what appears to be a Bitcoin Ponzi scheme.

The ED contends that Kundra received a substantial amount of Bitcoins from the mastermind behind the Gain Bitcoin Ponzi scheme, Amit Bhardwaj, for the establishment of a Bitcoin mining farm in Ukraine. Despite the passage of time, Kundra purportedly retains possession of these Bitcoins, with their current valuation exceeding a staggering Rs 150 crore.

As the investigation unfolds, the ED remains resolute in its pursuit of justice, aiming to uncover the full extent of financial irregularities and hold accountable those implicated in the alleged wrongdoing. The attachment of assets represents a crucial milestone in this endeavor, underscoring the authorities’ commitment to upholding the integrity of the financial system and safeguarding the interests of investors.
