J&K is a Union Territory: Reality Must Be Accepted, Says LG Manoj Sinha on UT Foundation Day
October 31, Srinagar: Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha reinforced that Jammu and Kashmir’s status as a Union Territory (UT) is a reality everyone must come to terms with. He expressed that the administration is progressing towards the roadmap laid out by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah, which involves delimitation first, followed by assembly elections, and, ultimately, the restoration of statehood.
Speaking at the UT Foundation Day event at SKICC, overlooking Dal Lake, LG Sinha emphasized, “J&K is currently a UT, and this fact must be accepted by everyone. When the time comes for J&K to regain its statehood, we will celebrate that day as well.” This year marks the fifth anniversary of Jammu and Kashmir’s designation as a Union Territory.
Responding to National Conference’s decision to abstain from the event, Sinha criticized those opposing the UT status despite taking an oath under the Indian Constitution, stating, “It reflects a dual character when individuals sworn to the Constitution reject J&K’s UT status.”
He also clarified delays around Panchayat elections, attributing them to reservations for backward classes, while affirming the administration’s intent to hold the elections soon. Citing developmental progress, Sinha highlighted advancements in infrastructure, healthcare, and external investments expected to reach Rs 1 lakh crore. “From roads to railways, hospitals to medical colleges, J&K has made strides,” he noted, adding that J&K Bank has transformed from a debt-ridden institution to a profitable bank serving the people.
Reflecting on J&K’s evolution, Sinha observed significant social changes, from Lal Chowk’s transformed identity to anti-terror protests and candlelight vigils in Pulwama. Addressing recent terrorist incidents, he assured that security forces would respond effectively, while efforts to eliminate terrorism continue. “Peace is essential for J&K’s growth, and provocations only endanger that progress,” he warned, urging unity and restraint for continued peace and prosperity.
