Sarjan Barkati Likely to Contest from Ganderbal

Days after his nomination form was rejected from Zainapora in Shopian, reports suggest that Sarjan Barkati is now likely to contest from the Ganderbal assembly segment. Barkati, a jailed cleric, is expected to challenge National Conference leader Omar Abdullah, who is also contesting from the same seat.

The deadline for filing nomination papers for Ganderbal is September 5. Although Barkati’s family has refrained from commenting on his potential candidacy, close aides have revealed plans for a strong campaign. Barkati’s daughter is expected to lead the campaign, as he remains incarcerated at the Central Jail in Srinagar.
