LPG price rise hits customers hard
The recent hike in non-subsidised cooking LPG by Rs19 per cylinder has once again left the rural hapless and urban wondering.
There has been a continuous rise in the price of non-subsidised LPG in the past one year. We are a joint family of 21 members living in one house only and consume nearly 15 cylinders a year. In the winter season, the usage doubles, as we have completely switched over to gas stove cooking.

Though many users keep their household utilisation of LPG limited to subsidised numbers, many large families in villages, too, have started depending upon gas stoves abandoning the traditional chullah after the Prime Minister Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY), which provides free stoves and cylinders.
“There has been a continuous rise in the price of non-subsidised LPG in the past one year. We are a joint family of 21 members living in one house only and consume nearly 15 cylinders a year. In the winter season, the usage doubles, as we have completely switched over to gas stove cooking,” said Anju Sharma, 46, a resident of Jakh, Raya Sujani.
Oil companies have raised the price of non-subsidised LPG to Rs714 per 14.2-kg cylinder from Rs695 previously. In all, non-subsidised cooking gas prices have gone up by Rs139.50 per cylinder in the last five months.
Even users in urban settings have been hit by the government’s exercise of raising the prices of essential commodities frequently.
“Though rise in prices of LPG cylinders have become a common phenomenon now, other daily use item including pulses, vegetables, fruits, medicines are also witnessing soaring price trends,” said Vandna Parihar, a housewife at Rehari. She said though the nation was crying over rise in onion prices, every essential commodity was burning a hole in pockets.
“Whatever the government gives as relief through dearness allowance, it charges more than double in the form of new taxes and other charges levied through price rise,” said Brij Mohan, a retired government employee.
