Press Trust of Kashmir | Srinagar: The International day against drug abuse and illicit trafficking is a United Nations International day against drug abuse and illegal drug trade. It is observed annually on 26 june , since 1989.The day 26 june is to commemorate Lin Zexu’s dismantling of the opium trade in Human, Guangdong, ending in june 25 1839, just before the first opium war in China .

The observance was instituted by General Assembly Resolution 42/112 of 7 December 1987.

Drug addiction is considered as a Neurobiological disease. When a person becomes a drug addict it’s very hard for him to spend a day without taking the drug.

Drugs that are the main cause of addiction are Heroin, Opium, Morphine, Inhalants, Brown Sugar, Cocaine, etc.

After Petroleum and Arms, the drug trade is the third largest business in the world. It is estimated in a report of the United Nations (2017) that about 25.5 million people in the world are suffering from drug use disorders.

Kashmir is also moving rapidly towards this vice. Although drug use disorders have no single cause there are a number of biological, psychological and social risk factors that can predispose a person to developing a chemical use disorder.

Drugs is a menace that needs to b eradicated at any cost and this task needs a commitment from all of us. Live less out of habit and more out of intent!(PTK)
