Illegal Mining poses threat to trout production in river sindh
Ganderbal, 10 Oct (PTK) : Despite ban on illegal mining in the J&K UT by the Government, the unabated mining in river sindh is posing a grave threat to the production of trout fish especially in village Yachama & hayan in Kangan area in Central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district.
Local residents of the area told Press Trust Of Kashmir (PTK) that tractors loaded of sand and boulders were being extracted from Nallah sindh over yachama and hayan bridge since last three months.
The unabated extraction of sand and boulders is not only affecting the production of trout in the nallah but also disturbing ecology in the district with authorities at the helm of affairs maintaining silence over the issue, said locals.
Mohammad ibrahim, a local of yachama told Press Trust Of Kashmir (PTK) that illegal sand & boulders excavated from the river sindh during the day time since last three months and is being sold on exorbitant rates, this practice continues with concerned officials not taking any cognizance of the same.
The movement of loaded tractors over Yachama-Hayan bridge is also a grave threat to the residents, as it is the only bridge connecting 250 households with National Highway (NH1),he adds.
In the absence of a proper vigil by the authorities including Geology and mining department, the contractors are extracting sand and boulders in large quantities from the nallah.
Meanwhile people of the area have sought immediate intervention of district administration and urged it to take prompt action against the mining mafia by seizing their machinery .(PTK)
