Er. Rashid Takes Oath as MP on Custody Parole

Srinagar, July 5: MP-elect Abdul Rashid Sheikh, known as Er. Rashid, took the oath as Member of Parliament from the Baramulla Lok Sabha segment on Friday. The 56-year-old, who has been in Delhi’s Tihar Jail for over five years on accusations of militant funding under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA), was granted a two-hour custody parole by Delhi’s Patiala House Court on July 2. This parole was granted after the National Investigation Agency (NIA) consented.
The oath-taking ceremony was attended by Er. Rashid’s family members, including his sons Asrar and Abrar Rashid, his daughter, wife, brother Khursheed Ahmad Sheikh, and other party functionaries. Attendees were required to produce identity cards and were prohibited from using phones and the internet.
After the ceremony, Er. Rashid interacted briefly with his family before being taken back to jail, with no permission to speak to the media. Er. Rashid won the Baramulla seat, defeating notable candidates such as JKNC’s Omar Abdullah, JKPC’s Sajjad Gani Lone, and JKPDP’s Fayaz Ahmad Mir.
