Crop Insurance for Apple Orchards Starting March 2025: Director Horticulture
Srinagar, Sep 03: In a significant relief for the horticultural sector, Director Horticulture Kashmir, Zahoor Ahmad Bhat, announced that crop insurance for apple orchards will be available starting March 2025. The insurance will cover losses due to hailstorms, adverse weather conditions, and low temperatures.
During a visit to Kulgam, where orchards were severely impacted by gusty winds and hailstorms, Bhat informed reporters that the government will cover 95% of the insurance premium, leaving only 5% for the farmers to pay.
Bhat highlighted that around 25-30 villages have suffered significant damage, with an estimated 50-60% of crops affected. The damage occurred at a critical stage just before harvest, exacerbating the situation.
Teams from SKUAST-K and the horticulture department have assessed the damage and are guiding farmers on the next steps. Bhat urged farmers to quickly collect and market the fallen produce to prevent further losses from rotting. He mentioned that experts are preparing advisories to help farmers manage and sell the damaged produce, and the department is coordinating with the marketing sector to find solutions.
In addition to the upcoming crop insurance, the Director mentioned ongoing efforts to assist farmers, including recommending treatments like Captan to reduce hail damage staining. While discussing protective measures, Bhat noted that implementing nets in conventional orchard setups is challenging, though more feasible in high-density orchards.
Regarding compensation concerns raised by local farmers, Bhat acknowledged the substantial losses and assured them that efforts are being made to ensure better support this time. Farmers, while expressing gratitude for the immediate response, urged the government to consider waiving off KCC loans and providing additional financial assistance. The Director assured that all necessary measures would be taken to mitigate their losses.
