Better Late Than Never: Mehbooba on Home Minister’s Statement on AFSPA
PDP President, Mehbooba Mufti, greeted Home Minister Amit Shah’s recent statement considering the revocation of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) from Jammu and Kashmir. However, she expressed cautious optimism, wary of it turning into mere rhetoric akin to unfulfilled promises like the BJP’s pledge of generating two crore jobs annually.
Mufti emphasized the urgency of action, suggesting the immediate release of journalists and Kashmiri detainees held without charges as a tangible first step. She reminded that PDP consistently advocated for AFSPA’s removal, a crucial component of their Alliance Agenda with the BJP.
In her statement on X, Mufti invoked the proverb “Der aayee durust aaye” (better late than never), urging sincerity over empty rhetoric. She cautioned against repeating past instances of hollow promises, urging the government to fulfill its commitments.
Shah’s recent interview with Gulistan TV revealed plans for troop reduction in the Union Territory, entrusting law and order solely to the Jammu and Kashmir Police. Mufti cautiously welcomed these developments, underscoring the potential relief AFSPA revocation could bring to the region’s populace.
While hopeful for tangible change, Mufti urged the government to match words with actions, starting with the release of detainees and journalists. She emphasized the need for concrete steps to address the grievances of the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
As discussions around AFSPA revocation gain momentum, Mufti’s sentiments reflect the cautious optimism prevalent among the region’s populace. The ball now lies in the government’s court to translate promises into meaningful actions, bringing genuine relief to the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
