Pakistan Affirms No Change in Trade Policy with India Despite Speculation

Pakistan’s Foreign Office clarified its stance on trade relations with India, asserting that there are no plans to resume trade ties that have been suspended since 2019. The announcement follows speculation sparked by remarks made by Pakistan’s new Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar regarding the potential restoration of trade activities with India.

The suspension of trade relations between the two nations dates back to August 2019, when India revoked Article 370, thereby altering the special status of Jammu and Kashmir. Since then, Pakistan has maintained a firm position, emphasizing that any resumption of trade hinges on India reversing its actions in Kashmir.

While there were indications of a potential shift in diplomatic stance from Pakistan’s business community’s eagerness to resume trade activities with India, the Foreign Office spokesperson reaffirmed Pakistan’s unwavering position.

India, on its part, has consistently maintained that the constitutional measures taken in Jammu and Kashmir are internal affairs and integral to the country. Despite Pakistan’s insistence on linking trade to the Kashmir issue, India has reiterated its desire for normal neighborly relations but emphasizes the need for Pakistan to address terrorism and hostility.

As the diplomatic landscape evolves, the prospect of trade normalization between India and Pakistan remains uncertain, with both countries standing firm on their respective positions.
