11 FIRs Registered in Jammu and Kashmir for MCC Violations

Jammu and Kashmir find itself grappling with a surge in Model Code of Conduct (MCC) violations, as revealed by election authorities. A total of 234 complaints have flooded in since March 16, prompting the registration of 11 First Information Reports (FIRs) by the Chief Electoral Officer J&K, Pandurang K Pole.

According to Pole, stringent action has been taken following the complaints, with notices issued in 80 cases and investigations initiated in 29 instances. Srinagar district emerges as a hotspot for MCC infractions, with 46 reported violations, closely followed by Jammu with 34.

The gravity of the situation is underscored by the involvement of government employees in these transgressions. Out of 36 MCC violations reported via official channels in Srinagar, 21 were attributed to government personnel. Swift disciplinary measures have been taken, leading to the suspension of four employees engaged in political activities.

State and central agencies have been vigilant in curbing malpractices, seizing cash, liquor, drugs, and other inducements worth over Rs 40 crores across 10 locations during the election period. Despite the challenges, voter turnout in the Srinagar Lok Sabha constituency on Monday reached an encouraging 38%, marking the highest participation since 1996.

With three out of five Lok Sabha constituencies already having conducted polls, attention now turns to the upcoming rounds in Baramulla and Anantnag-Rajouri, scheduled for May 20 and 25 respectively.

As the electoral process unfolds, the authorities remain steadfast in their commitment to uphold the integrity of the democratic exercise, ensuring fair and transparent elections in the region.
