Voting Concludes Across Pakistan In Election Marred By Sporadic Violence

Pakistan concluded its nationwide voting process on Thursday amidst sporadic violence and connectivity disruptions due to the government’s suspension of mobile and internet services aimed at thwarting potential terror attacks.

Polling stations opened at 8:00 AM and closed at 5:00 PM, with a countrywide public holiday declared to facilitate the 128,585,760 registered voters. Despite the scheduled end time, individuals inside polling stations were allowed to cast their votes.

However, several polling stations encountered delays, and there were reports of a terror attack targeting security forces, resulting in the loss of four policemen.

Following the closure of polls, ballot boxes were unsealed in the presence of candidates’ agents, and counting commenced under the supervision of presiding officers. Results were to be publicly announced and displayed at polling stations, with transmission to returning officers via the Election Management System.

The interruption of cellular and internet services during the elections drew criticism from political parties, raising concerns about the transparency of the voting process. Approximately 650,000 security personnel were deployed nationwide to ensure safety.

With former Prime Minister Imran Khan incarcerated, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) led by Nawaz Sharif is anticipated to emerge as the leading party. Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) candidates contested independently following a Supreme Court ruling depriving the party of its cricket ‘bat’ symbol.

Pakistan’s ongoing battle against terrorism faces renewed challenges, with resurgent rebels and escalating threats posed by groups like the Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan and Baloch nationalists.

The new government will confront formidable hurdles in addressing these security concerns amidst evolving regional dynamics, including the recent resurgence of militant groups following the Taliban’s rise to power in Afghanistan.
