“Supreme Court Orders Judicial Inquiry into Leh Violence, Four Dead in September 24 Incident”

SUPREME COURT,OCTOBER 17 (PTK): In a significant development, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), Government of India, has formally notified a judicial inquiry into the violent incident that erupted in Leh on 24 September 2025, in which four persons lost their lives.
The inquiry will be headed by Justice B. S. Chauhan, a retired judge of the Supreme Court of India.  He will be assisted by Retired District & Sessions Judge Mohan Singh Parihar as Judicial Secretary, and Tushar Anand, IAS, as Administrative Secretary.
According to the MHA order, the probe will examine:
1.The circumstances that led to the breakdown of law and order in Leh town on 24 September.
2.The nature and proportionality of the police/security response in controlling the situation.
3.The causes behind the deaths of the four individuals, and whether there was any lapse of duty or misconduct.
The MHA’s notification also notes that an FIR (No. 144/2025) has already been registered at Leh Police Station under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023.   Moreover, the MHA has directed the Chief Secretary and the Director General of Police (Ladakh UT) to extend all necessary logistical and administrative support for the inquiry.(PTK)
