SRINAGAR: The anticipated sighting of the Shawwal crescent in Saudi Arabia did not materialize on Monday, as confirmed by the moon sighting committee, extending the observance of Ramadan until April 9. Consequently, Eid Al Fitr will be celebrated on April 10, following the completion of the 30-day fasting period.
The Supreme Court of Saudi Arabia had urged Muslims across the Kingdom to diligently search for the Shawwal crescent on the evening of Monday, the 29th day of Ramadan.
Traditionally, the sighting of the Shawwal moon signifies the conclusion of Ramadan and heralds the commencement of Eid Al Fitr festivities.
Earlier predictions by the International Astronomical Center suggested that countries which commenced Ramadan on March 11 might expect a crescent sighting on April 8. However, the visibility was hindered by the moon setting before sunset, resulting in a conjunction after sunset, making the sighting uncertain.
Conversely, nations that began Ramadan on March 12 may anticipate the crescent sighting on Tuesday, April 9, with clearer prospects, according to the center’s forecasts.
In parallel, the Emirates Astronomical Society in the UAE has forecasted the commencement of Eid festivities on April 10.
The faithful around the world await the definitive sighting of the Shawwal crescent, marking the transition from the month of fasting to the joyous occasion of Eid Al Fitr.
