GIS-Based Master Plan for Kathua Discussed at Stakeholders’ Meeting

Kathua, May 29 (PTK): A stakeholders’ meeting was held at the DC Office Complex Kathua on Thursday to discuss modalities for preparation of the Draft Local Area Plan under the GIS-based Master Plan for Kathua town and its adjoining areas, with participants emphasizing sustainable urban growth, decongestion measures and flood management planning.

The meeting was attended by Bharat Bhushan, Rajiv Jasrotia, Rajesh Sharma, Mahima Madan, Ranjeet Thakur, district officers and representatives of Beopar Mandal.

The meeting was also joined virtually by Dr Sakshi, representing the Project Coordinator from Guru Nanak Dev University’s Centre of Urban Planning for Capacity Building.

During a detailed presentation, Dr. Sakshi outlined the project roadmap and key parameters for formulation of the Local Area Plan, focusing on planned urban development, environmental sustainability, improved quality of life, economic growth and efficient infrastructure and public services.

Officials informed the meeting that Kathua town and adjoining peripheral areas meeting prescribed parameters would be incorporated into the final Master Plan. It was also revealed that a comprehensive survey would soon be launched to collect vital data required for scientific urban planning. The identified gaps and issues will later be placed in the public domain for suggestions and feedback before finalisation of the plan.

Speaking on the occasion, Bharat Bhushan stressed the need to address critical urban issues, including flood vulnerability, channelisation of Kathua Khad, creation of additional parking facilities, decongestion of the main market, relocation of street vendors and development of a proper drainage network. He also called for an extensive and data-driven survey to ensure effective planning.

Rajiv Jasrotia emphasized that the developmental needs of areas adjoining Kathua town should be incorporated into the planning process to ensure balanced and systematic future growth.

Deputy Commissioner Rajesh Sharma highlighted the importance of people-centric and meticulous planning, stating that the proposed Master Plan should strengthen urban infrastructure without adversely affecting existing facilities or the communities dependent upon them.

The meeting resolved that consultations with stakeholders would continue throughout the planning process and that a follow-up meeting would be convened after completion of the survey and compilation of findings to take the planning exercise forward in a comprehensive manner.(PTK)
