Police officer, man killed in mob violence over alleged cow slaughter in ÚP

Lucknow: An SHO posted at Syana and a civilian were killed after a mob in Uttar Pradesh’s Bulandshahr attacked the police on Monday following rumours of cow slaughter in the area.

The incident took place near the Chingrawathi crossing, where hundreds of people had gathered. The protesters soon entered into a scuffle with the local police and the crowd started pelting stones at them. The police also fired in retaliation, killing a youth identified as Sumit.

Speaking to News18, Bulandshahr District Magistrate Anuj Jha said, “The incident was reported at around 11am and our officers rushed to the spot. Few people were trying to block the road, police officers tried to intervene and ultimately they were attacked. Syana SHO Subodh Kumar Singh was injured in the process and was later declared brought dead.”

SSP Bulandshahr KB Singh said force had been deployed in the area and the situation is being monitored to identify anti-social elements.

The trouble started after villagers found some body parts of cow and its progeny in a jungle in Mahaw village, Additional Director General of Meerut zone Prashant Kumar said.

Angry villagers and members of various Hindu groups brought the animal remains in tractor-trolley to the Chingarwathi Police Chowki and demanded action against the culprits. They raised slogans against the police administration and blocked the Bulandshahr-Garh highway. Jha said police and senior officials tried to reason with the protestors but they refused to budge.

As Sub-divisional Magistrate Avinash Kumar Maurya arrived on the scene, protesters turned violent, pelting stones on policemen and indulging in arson. Jha said police had to open fire in self-defence.
