Kashmiri Pandit Conference Urges Community Action on Population Decline and Rising Divorce Rates

Srinagar, 15 July: The Kashmiri Pandit Conference (KPC), led by Community Sevak and President Kundan Kashmiri, has issued an urgent appeal to the Kashmiri Pandit community, particularly the youth, to address critical issues threatening the community’s future.

In a heartfelt message, the KPC urged community members to prioritize population growth and exercise caution regarding inter-caste marriages and rising divorce rates. The organization emphasized that these actions are crucial for ensuring the sustainability and longevity of the Kashmiri Pandit community.

Kundan Kashmiri expressed deep concern over the declining population and the increasing prevalence of inter-ethnic marriages and divorces. Despite ongoing efforts by community well-wishers, activists, and organizations like the KPC to educate the youth, these social challenges continue to pose significant threats to the community’s cultural heritage and traditions.

“Inter-ethnic marriages, once considered taboo, have now become common among displaced Kashmiri Pandits, often viewed as a status symbol,” said Kundan Kashmiri. “As we adapt to modernity for livelihood purposes, we risk losing our rich cultural heritage, language, and traditions.”

Recent estimates indicate that over 40% of Kashmiri Pandit youth in metropolitan areas have opted for inter-caste marriages during the displacement period. Historically, such marriages were rare and often linked to social or economic distress. The current acceptance of these unions raises concerns about the future of the community’s identity and gene pool.

The KPC has emphasized the necessity of upholding the community’s rich value system, opposing inter-ethnic marriages, and maintaining genetic lineage through the Gotra system. With 36 main Gotras and numerous sub-Gotras, this system has preserved the community’s integrity for generations.

While the KPC respects those who have chosen partners outside the community, it accentuates the importance of assimilating these relationships into the cultural framework. The organization notes that the increase in inter-caste marriages has led to family divisions and a rise in divorce cases, with significant percentages reported in various studies since 1995.

The community’s declining population, coupled with an increasing death rate and a trend towards smaller families, poses a serious threat to its survival. The KPC calls for proactive steps to strengthen the community and secure a lasting legacy for future generations.

“The Kashmiri Pandit community has faced immense challenges over the past 35 years, and it continues to grapple with internal issues that threaten our existence. We must come together to revitalize our community and ensure its future,” urged Kundan Kashmiri. “Let us take proactive steps to strengthen our community and secure a lasting legacy for generations to come’,stated Kashmiri..
