J&K Calls For Proactive Measures Amid Concern Over New Covid-19 Variant

JAMMU, Dec 20 (PTK): In response to growing concerns over the emergence of a new COVID-19 variant, the Jammu and Kashmir administration has issued proactive directives to enhance preparedness across the Union Territory. Health and Medical Education Secretary Bhupinder Kumar chaired a review meeting, emphasizing the need for swift and comprehensive measures to tackle potential challenges.
While no case of the new variant (JN.1) has been reported in Jammu and Kashmir, the administration is taking preemptive steps following the advisory issued by the Union Health Ministry. During the meeting, Secretary Bhupinder Kumar urged all heads of departments and chief medical officers to activate COVID-19 testing facilities and conduct extensive testing in accordance with the revised surveillance strategy.
The focus was on meticulous reporting of Influenza-like Illnesses (ILI) and Severe Acute Respiratory Infections (SARI) while adhering to recommended testing protocols. Kumar stressed the importance of timely requisition of logistics such as testing kits, drugs, and personal protective equipment (PPE) kits. Additionally, he called for strengthening community-based surveillance to facilitate the early detection of unusual events.
As part of the preparedness measures, heads of departments were advised to conduct regular mock drills to assess the functionality of oxygen generation plants. The emphasis extended to reassessing the readiness of all facilities to ensure operational preparedness in the face of any potential challenges posed by the new variant.
The Jammu and Kashmir administration’s proactive stance reflects a commitment to staying ahead of the curve and safeguarding public health. These measures underscore the importance of a coordinated and vigilant approach to mitigate the impact of emerging threats in the ongoing battle against the pandemic.
