Government Announces Implementation of Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019 (CAA)

The government has declared the implementation of the contentious Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), 2019. Officials informed the News Agency Press Trust of Kashmir about the decision, which comes four years after the bill’s passage through Parliament.

The CAA, which introduces religion as a criterion for citizenship for the first time, has been a subject of intense debate and protests since its inception. The act allows Indian nationality to be granted to non-Muslim migrants from neighboring countries—Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Afghanistan—who entered India before 2015.

The announcement of the implementation follows a period of vigorous opposition from various quarters, including political leaders and chief ministers of non-BJP states. The initial passage of the bill in December 2019 was marred by violent protests, resulting in the loss of over 100 lives.

According to officials, the regulations have been prepared, and an online portal has been set up to facilitate the process. Applicants are allowed to disclose their year of entry into India without the need for additional travel documents.

The implementation of the CAA is expected to have far-reaching implications on the nation’s social fabric, sparking debates on secularism, immigration policies, and religious freedom.

As the government moves forward with the implementation, the nation braces itself for further discussions and actions surrounding this controversial legislation.
