FCI scam: 3 accused sent to judicial custody

Srinagar January, 26 (PTK) Three accused in the alleged Food Corporation of India (FCI) scam unearthed by the CBI, New Delhi, were presented in a court on Monday that sent them to judicial custody. They were initially granted remand by the CBI for four days and this was later extended on two occasions.

The three who were arrested from Chandigarh are Rajiv Kumar Mishra, DGM quality control/personnel of Chandigarh with permanent residence in New Delhi, Satish Verma, manager DO, FCI Lab, Chandigarh, and Ravinder Singh Khaira, owner of Guru Kripa Rice and Agro Industries.

They were initially granted remand by the CBI for four days and this was later extended on two occasions. The CBI in their application in the court had asked for a further remand as during their investigation it came to light that they had also conducted recruitment fraud in the FCI and there was a systematic collection and distribution of collected illegal gratifications among the higher officers of the FCI and the ministry.

The accused were arrested giving and accepting a bribe of ₹50,000. A first information report (FIR) was registered on January 10 in New Delhi against 74 people and entities, including 34 serving and three retired officers of the FCI, 17 private individuals, 20 rice mills and grain merchants, and raids were launched at over 50 locations in Punjab, Haryana and Delhi as a corruption racket involving FCI officials of various ranks, rice millers, grain merchants and middlemen in the procurement, storage and distribution of foodgrains across several parts of north India was unearthed.(PTK)
