DoT Issues Advisory Against Fraudulent WhatsApp Calls
NEW DELHI : With the escalation of fraud calls and cybercrimes, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) issued an advisory urging citizens to beware of WhatsApp calls originating from foreign numbers and cautioned against disclosing any personal information.
The advisory highlighted instances where callers, claiming to be from the DoT, threatened recipients with mobile number disconnection or alleged involvement in illegal activities. Subsequently, callers requested individuals to complete KYC processes, aiming to obtain sensitive information. The DoT clarified that it does not authorize such calls.
Furthermore, the DoT warned against WhatsApp calls from foreign numbers impersonating government officials, emphasizing the risks of personal data theft and financial fraud perpetrated by cybercriminals.
To combat such threats, the advisory urged citizens to remain vigilant and refrain from sharing information when receiving suspicious calls. Additionally, individuals were encouraged to report fraudulent communications through the ‘Chakshu-Report Suspected Fraud Communications’ feature on the Sanchar Saathi portal (www.sancharsaathi.gov.in).
Proactive reporting aids the DoT in preventing the misuse of telecom resources for cybercrimes and financial frauds. Moreover, citizens were advised to utilize the ‘Know Your Mobile Connections’ facility on the Sanchar Saathi portal to verify and report any unauthorized mobile connections.
In the event of falling victim to cybercrime or financial fraud, individuals were directed to report incidents to the cyber-crime helpline number 1930 or via www.cybercrime.gov.in.
By disseminating these guidelines and encouraging active participation in reporting fraudulent activities, the DoT aims to safeguard citizens against the perils of fraudulent WhatsApp calls and cybercrimes, ensuring a safer digital environment for all.
