Directorate of School Education in Jammu and Kashmir Clamps Down on Unfair Practices in Private Schools

PTK News Desk

In a bid to ensure fair and transparent practices within the education sector, the Directorate of School Education in Jammu and Kashmir has issued stringent directives to private schools ahead of the 2024-25 academic session. These directives aim to curb unauthorized fee hikes and prevent schools from engaging in unfair practices that burden students and parents financially.

One of the key points highlighted in the directives is the requirement for private schools to seek approval from the Fee Fixation Committee before implementing any fee hikes. Failure to adhere to this requirement may result in hefty fines ranging from Rs 50,000 to Rs 1 lakh, with the possibility of registration cancellation for persistent offenders.

Additionally, the Directorate has cracked down on the practice of schools mandating parents to purchase uniforms and books from specific vendors. By prohibiting such practices, the Directorate aims to promote fair competition among suppliers and alleviate financial strain on parents.

The circular issued by the Directorate emphasizes that private schools are only permitted to charge tuition, annual, transport fees, and voluntary special purpose fees for activities like picnics and excursions. Any additional fees imposed beyond these categories will be considered unauthorized.

A senior officer involved in the development of these directives highlighted the importance of upholding transparency and accountability within the education system. These measures are aimed at protecting students and parents from undue financial burdens and discriminatory practices.

The enforcement of these directives is backed by the Jammu and Kashmir School Education Act 2022, which provides provisions for taking action against schools found in violation of its regulations. The Directorate has urged parents to report any instances of non-compliance or unfair practices to the Chief Education Officer of the district or the Directorate of School Education.

By implementing these measures, the Directorate of School Education in Jammu and Kashmir seeks to create an educational environment that is fair, accessible, and conducive to the holistic development of students. It is hoped that these directives will pave the way for a more equitable education system in the region.
