PTK News Desk

Union Minister Amit Shah affirmed that elections in Jammu and Kashmir will be held before the Supreme Court’s deadline of September 30. The assurance comes amidst the apex court’s directive to conduct elections in the region by the specified date, aiming to restore democratic processes and statehood. Shah’s announcement underscores the government’s commitment to fulfilling constitutional obligations and restoring normalcy in the region.

The last Assembly polls in Jammu and Kashmir date back to 2014, followed by a period of political upheaval leading to the imposition of Governor’s Rule. The subsequent abrogation of Article 370 in 2019 and the region’s reorganization into Union Territories further added complexity to the political landscape. However, Shah’s assertion signals a renewed focus on democratic governance and electoral processes in the region.

During his address at the CNN-News18 Rising India Summit 2024, Shah also emphasized the BJP’s prospects in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, particularly in Uttar Pradesh. Expressing confidence in the party’s performance, he predicted surpassing previous electoral achievements in the state. Additionally, Shah condemned parties accused of perpetuating ‘parivaar-waad’ (dynastic politics), reaffirming India’s commitment to democratic principles and pluralistic values.

The assurance of timely elections in Jammu and Kashmir, coupled with Shah’s electoral projections, sets the stage for significant political developments in the region and the country at large. As the nation anticipates the restoration of democratic processes in Jammu and Kashmir, the forthcoming elections hold immense significance in shaping the region’s future trajectory.
