Enhancing Election Security: GPS-Enabled Tracking Systems to Safeguard Poll Duty Vehicles in Jammu and Kashmir

In preparation for the upcoming parliamentary elections in Jammu and Kashmir, the election department is taking proactive measures to ensure the safety and integrity of the electoral process. One such initiative involves the installation of GPS-enabled tracking systems in poll duty vehicles, as mandated by the Election Commission.

J-K Chief Electoral Officer Pandurang K Pole has initiated the procurement process by issuing a request for proposal (RFP) for companies to provide GPS-enabled vehicle tracking systems. The objective is to establish real-time monitoring capabilities for the movement of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) and Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) devices during the pre-poll and poll days.

The decision to implement GPS tracking stems from the need for meticulous oversight of EVMs and VVPATs throughout their transportation and storage, including the deployment of reserve units by sector officers. By fitting polling party and sector officers’ vehicles with GPS trackers, authorities aim to ensure transparency and accountability in the handling of electoral equipment.

CEO Pole emphasizes the importance of integrating GPS tracker devices into election duty vehicles, with a tentative target of 12,500 vehicles slated for installation. Control rooms will be established at both district and CEO levels to facilitate comprehensive monitoring and tracking of the electoral equipment.

The deployment of GPS-enabled tracking systems represents a significant step towards enhancing the security and efficiency of the electoral process in Jammu and Kashmir. By leveraging technology to monitor the movement of critical voting equipment, authorities seek to instill public confidence and safeguard the integrity of democratic elections.
