Srinagar, July 7 — In a distressing turn of events, thousands of fish have been found dead in the Tsoont Koel stream near the Barbar Shah area of Srinagar. Officials attribute the mass die-off to a combination of oxygen depletion and pollution.

A representative from the fisheries department explained that the primary cause is the depletion of oxygen in the water bodies. “This is a common occurrence during the summer months,” the official noted, pointing to the high temperatures and humidity that lead to reduced oxygen levels in the water, which proves fatal for the fish.

“Pollution also plays a significant role in exacerbating the situation. Waste disposal and contaminants from surrounding areas further degrade water quality, intensifying the depletion of oxygen,” he added.

The local residents have expressed their anguish over the incident, emphasizing the broader impact on the community. “This is not just about the death of fish, it’s about the entire ecological balance and our means of sustenance being threatened,” said one local resident. Many are concerned about the repercussions for those whose livelihoods depend on fishing, fearing long-term economic and environmental consequences.

The incident has highlighted the urgent need for better environmental management and pollution control measures to protect the local ecosystem and the communities that rely on it.
