Srinagar Blanketed in White as Heavy Snowfall Disrupts Normal Life

Jammu and Kashmir, witnessed a picturesque transformation as heavy snowfall painted the region in a pristine white landscape. The temperature dropped significantly, bringing life to a standstill, especially in terms of transportation.
All flights scheduled for today at Srinagar International Airport were canceled due to the fresh snowfall and adverse weather conditions. Airport officials highlighted the unsafe weather as the primary reason for the disruptions, leaving many passengers stranded.
Adding to the transportation chaos, seven trains in the Valley were also canceled, exacerbating connectivity challenges in the region. The Kashmir Valley woke up to a fresh layer of snow, creating significant obstacles for daily life and causing disruptions in both surface and air travel.
According to the meteorological department, the plains received 3-6 inches of snowfall, while the middle and higher reaches of Kashmir Division recorded 8-12 inches. Various areas, including Qazigund, Pahalgam, Kupwara, Kokernag, Gulmarg, Banihal, and Batote, reported varying amounts of snowfall.
The meteorological official predicted the possibility of light to moderate snow continuing in many places until the afternoon and late afternoon on Sunday, followed by a gradual improvement. Monday’s forecast anticipates partly to generally cloudy weather with the chance of light snow over isolated higher reaches. Between February 6-13, the weather is expected to be dry.
As the 40-day harsh winter period of ‘Chillai-Kalan’ concluded on January 29, Kashmir is currently in the middle of the 20-day-long winter period known as ‘Chillai-Khurd,’ ending on February 19. This will be succeeded by the 10-day-long period of ‘Chillai-Bachha’ (baby cold), starting from February 20 to March 1. Residents brace themselves for the challenges and scenic beauty that winter continues to bring to the valley.
