LEH : Renowned environmentalist and educationist Sonam Wangchuk concluded his 21-day climate fast yesterday, marking a significant moment in his ongoing campaign for environmental awareness and action. However, his respite from fasting did not signify a retreat from activism, as he issued a stern warning to the government regarding the scheduled Border March on April 7.

As per news agency Press Trust of Kashmir,  following the conclusion of his fast, Wangchuk asserted that if the government proceeds with the Border March, the people of Leh are prepared to launch a Jail Bharo Andolan (fill the jails protest). This ultimatum underscores the seriousness of the environmental concerns facing the region and the determination of its residents to protect their land and resources.

Wangchuk, known for his innovative approaches to education and environmental conservation, has been a vocal advocate for sustainable development in the fragile ecosystems of Ladakh. His recent fast aimed to draw attention to the urgent need for climate action and to mobilize support for measures that prioritize environmental protection.

The Border March, slated for April 7, has sparked controversy and resistance among local communities who fear its potential impact on the region’s ecology and traditional way of life. Wangchuk’s threat of civil disobedience reflects the growing frustration and disillusionment felt by many residents who feel marginalized in decisions affecting their homeland.

As the countdown to April 7 continues, tensions are likely to mount, and the fate of the Border March hangs in the balance. The government faces mounting pressure to heed the concerns of local activists like Wangchuk and to prioritize sustainable solutions that respect the environment and the rights of indigenous communities.
