Deadly Terrorist Attacks Shake Balochistan, Leaving 15 Dead

Heavily armed terrorists targeted key locations in Balochistan, Pakistan. The assailants struck Mach town, approximately 70 kilometers from the provincial capital Quetta, leading to a tragic toll of 15 lives.

According to the Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR), terrorists, including suicide bombers, attacked Mach and Kolpur Complexes in Balochistan on the night between January 29 and 30. Law enforcement agencies (LEAs) responded effectively, resulting in the death of nine terrorists and the capture of three others who attempted to breach the high-security central Mach Jail.

The ISPR confirmed the loss of four security personnel and two civilians since Monday night. A senior police official reported that at least 15 rockets were fired at the Central Mach Jail during the attacks.

The Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) Majeed group claimed responsibility for the attacks. Following the assault, a prolonged gunbattle unfolded between security forces and the attackers, who sought refuge in the mountains.

Balochistan’s caretaker Information Minister, Jan Achakzai, assured that the situation had been stabilized after the attacks. However, he noted that the final clearance operation in Mach was still underway.

This assault stands as the deadliest by militants this year, following a similar incident in November 2023 when 14 soldiers were killed in Gwadar. The BLA’s claim of responsibility indicated that the attack was a response to Pakistani strikes on insurgent hideouts in Iran earlier in January.

The strikes were a reaction to an Iranian attack in Pakistan, targeting a different Baloch militant group. The BLA had threatened retaliatory actions against security forces in Balochistan following Pakistan’s strikes in Iran.

Balochistan province, as well as Iran’s Sistan-Baluchistan province, has witnessed a prolonged insurgency by Baloch nationalists for over two decades. Despite government claims of quelling the insurgency, violence continues to persist in the region.

The shared 900-kilometer border between Iran and Pakistan remains largely lawless, providing a breeding ground for smugglers and militants. The recent attacks underscore the ongoing challenges faced by both nations in maintaining security along this volatile border.
