COVID-19: Restrictions continue in Kashmir for third day
Srinagar, Mar 21 (PTK): Strict restrictions on movement and assembly of people continued for the third consecutive day on Saturday in Kashmir to contain the spread of the new coronavirus that has infected one person in the valley, officials said.
They said adequate government forces have been deployed and barricades have been put up at several places in Srinagar. Only government and essential services employees with valid identity cards, media persons, and people with health emergency were allowed to move on streets, they added.
The curbs were imposed after a 67-year-old woman from Khanyar area of Srinagar, who had returned on March 16 from Saudi Arabia after performing Umrah, tested positive for covid-19.
Reports said that shops, petrol pumps and other business establishments were shut in most parts of the valley, while public transport was also off from the roads.
They said that only the vehicles carrying people from essential service departments particularly health facilities were allowed.
According to deputy commissioner Srinagar Shahid Iqbal Choudhary, the restrictions on movement across Srinagar are aimed at containing the spread of the coronavirus.
The DM has appealed to the general public to cooperate with the administration and ensure strict adherence to the order. He said violation of the order would constitute a criminal offence and attract strict penal action.
