Child Welfare Committee Urges Vigilance Against Identity Disclosure by “Self-Styled Journalists
PTK News Desk
SRINAGAR : The Child Welfare Committee has raised alarm over the alarming trend of self-styled journalists stigmatizing children by disclosing their identities. In a recent communication, the Committee’s Chairperson, Dr. Khair Ul Nisa, has urged the information department to take immediate action by verifying the credentials of individuals carrying microphones, cameras, and other media accessories.
The rise of social media platforms has provided a platform for individuals to highlight public interest matters, including issues related to children’s rights. However, the Committee notes with concern that some individuals, masquerading as journalists, are violating laws by disclosing children’s identities. Such actions, the Committee emphasizes, are in direct contravention of the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015, and could lead to severe penalties, including imprisonment.
“To address this concerning trend and prevent further violations of the JJ Act, the Child Welfare Committee has issued a circular, dated May 30, 2023, aiming to educate and raise awareness among all stakeholders,” stated Dr. Khair Ul Nisa. The circular, marked as CWC/Srinagar/Cir/2024/02, underscores the importance of safeguarding children’s identities and protecting their rights.
The communication further highlights the need for collaboration with media organizations to ensure compliance with the JJ Act. The Committee has urged the information department to distribute copies of the circular to all registered media persons and organizations. Additionally, a request has been made to furnish a list of accredited/registered media personnel for reference purposes.
“It is imperative that concerned officers of the information department conduct regular verifications of individuals claiming to be journalists and carrying media equipment,” the Committee emphasized in its communication. By monitoring and verifying the credentials of media personnel, the Committee aims to curb the stigmatization of children and uphold their rights to privacy and dignity.
The proactive stance taken by the Child Welfare Committee underscores its commitment to safeguarding the well-being of children and ensuring that they are protected from exploitation and harm. Through collaborative efforts with media organizations and stringent enforcement of the JJ Act, the Committee seeks to create a safe and supportive environment for children to thrive and grow.
The Child Welfare Committee calls upon all stakeholders, including the media fraternity and government authorities, to join hands in combatting the stigmatization of children and promoting their rights and well-being.
