Record High Temperatures Sweep Kashmir Valley

 

Srinagar, Jul 28 :  The Kashmir Valley is sweltering under intense heat as temperatures soared to unprecedented levels on Sunday, marking one of the hottest days on record in several locations.

 

According to the meteorological department, Srinagar experienced its hottest day of the season at 36.2°C, the fourth warmest July day in the city’s history. The all-time highest July temperature for Srinagar was 38.3°C, recorded on July 10, 1946. The mercury also reached 37°C on July 9, 1999, and 36.6°C in 1997.

 

Qazigund and Kokernag broke their records, with temperatures hitting 35.6°C and 34.6°C, respectively. Qazigund’s previous record of 34.5°C was set on July 11, 1988, while Kokernag’s was 33.3°C, set earlier this month on July 3. The town’s third-highest temperature, 33°C, was recorded on July 8, 1993.

 

Elsewhere, Pahalgam recorded a maximum of 31.1°C, Kupwara 35.8°C, Gulmarg 25.6°C, and Jammu 32.0°C.

 

The forecast predicts generally cloudy weather with intermittent light to moderate rain and thundershowers across the Kashmir Division and widespread areas of the Jammu Division from July 29 to 31. From August 1 to 4, more light to moderate rain and thundershowers are expected.

 

Intense showers could lead to landslides, mudslides, and shooting stones in vulnerable areas, with the possibility of heavy rainfall in some parts of the Jammu Division. A significant drop in daytime temperatures is anticipated from July 29 onwards.
