NEW DELHI: As the nation gears up for the Lok Sabha elections, the Election Commission (EC) convened a crucial meeting on Wednesday to review law and order along with security measures across the country. Directed at chief secretaries, directors general of police, and heads of central agencies, the EC emphasized the imperative of ensuring peaceful and inducement-free polls.
One of the primary focuses of the meeting was to maintain strict vigilance along inter-state and international borders to prevent the influx of illicit substances such as liquor, cash, drugs, and arms. In light of recent events, including violence in Manipur, the EC urged swift action to assist internally-displaced persons and ensure their participation in the electoral process.
Emphasizing seamless coordination among stakeholders, the commission underscored the need for diligent deployment of central forces and logistical support for security personnel. Additionally, identifying and monitoring potential flashpoints in border areas were discussed to preempt any disruptions during the electoral process.
Addressing concerns about illegal activities, the EC stressed the importance of curbing the movement of contraband items, including narcotics and arms, across international borders. Measures to identify entry and exit points for the movement of illicit goods like liquor and cash were also highlighted.
In challenging regions, such as Arunachal Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Maharashtra, the EC reviewed support from the Indian Air Force and state civil aviation departments for logistical operations. Furthermore, ensuring adequate security measures to safeguard political functionaries and candidates, particularly in states with high threat perceptions like Chhattisgarh and the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, was emphasized.
Overall, the meeting served as a platform to address critical issues and strategize proactive measures to uphold the integrity and security of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.
