October 31 ‘Black Day’ for J&K: Congress President Tariq Karra Opposes UT Foundation Day Celebrations

Srinagar, October 31 – Congress President Tariq Karra on Tuesday firmly denounced the observance of October 31 as Union Territory (UT) Foundation Day for Jammu and Kashmir, calling it a “black day” for the region. Speaking at the Congress Party headquarters on the 40th anniversary of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi’s assassination, Karra stated that the Congress Party would not partake in any celebrations marking the day, as it signifies a significant loss of autonomy for Jammu and Kashmir.

“The October 31 observance resonates as a day of distress for many residents,” Karra said, pointing to a sense of disenfranchisement after the state was reorganized as a Union Territory. “Jammu and Kashmir’s status was downgraded without the consent of its people, and this erosion of autonomy cannot be celebrated,” he added.

Addressing security issues, Karra criticized the current security review framework, which he claimed lacks inclusivity and leaves local voices unheard. According to Karra, the exclusion of a Chief Minister or local representatives from the security process creates a disconnect, potentially resulting in conflicting security directions that could harm both regional welfare and national security.

Reaffirming the Congress Party’s stance on the restoration of statehood, Karra emphasized that this commitment must be upheld. “We are ready to fight for the complete statehood, whether in the Assembly or on the streets,” he declared, urging Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah to honor the promises made to the people of J&K.

Karra also questioned the rationale for withholding statehood, especially given the government’s claims of improved security in the region. The Congress Party, he assured, would continue to advocate for the rights of the people and work toward restoring Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood status.
