LEH, July 10: Two individuals have been apprehended in the Nyoma sector of Leh district, Ladakh, on charges of smuggling a substantial quantity of gold from China.
The 21st Battalion of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) intercepted the two smugglers, identified as Tsering Chinba and Stanzin Dorgyal, residents of Koyul, Nyoma, in the general area of Zursar near PP 54. The duo was found in possession of 108 kilograms of gold, estimated to be worth several crores of rupees.
According to officials, the gold was hidden in a house in Koyul village, located near the Line of Actual Control (LAC) with China. The successful seizure was the result of coordinated efforts between ITBP and local police, following precise intelligence inputs.
The intelligence-driven operation unfolded when the locally stationed Army Brigade, part of the 15 Sector, received crucial information about the smuggling activities. They promptly relayed this to the 21st Battalion of the ITBP, who then acted swiftly to apprehend the smugglers and seize the gold.
The confiscated gold has since been transported to the ITBP headquarters in Leh district. This operation underscores the critical role of intelligence sharing and coordination among security forces in thwarting smuggling activities along the sensitive LAC region.
