Anticipated Western Disturbance to Bring Heavy Snowfall and Rain to Jammu and Kashmir

A potent Western Disturbance is set to impact Jammu and Kashmir starting from the night/morning of 18th February, heralding a forecast of moderate to heavy rain and snow across the region.

According to officials cited by the Press Trust of Kashmir, the onset of precipitation may commence as rain in the plains, with a potential transition to snowfall later on 18th or 19th February. However, there remains uncertainty regarding continuous snowfall in the plains, as temperatures could rise again by the afternoon of the 19th. Conversely, higher altitudes are expected to experience significant snowfall, ranging from heavy to very heavy until the 20th February. Some areas may witness snow accumulations exceeding 5 feet, with the potential for accumulations at Sadhna Top to surpass 10-12 feet, including previous snowfall. Consequently, prolonged closure of passes such as Sadhna Top, Razdan Pass, and Sinthan Pass is anticipated.

In the plains and middle reaches, should snow accumulate, it is likely to be denser than usual, posing a risk of damage. Unlike typical dry, fluffy snow, this precipitation may have a heavier consistency.

Moreover, the heightened risk of landslides and shooting stones along the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway underscores the need for caution. Travelers are advised to postpone their journeys between the 18th and 21st February to mitigate potential hazards.
