Another Milestone: ISRO’s PSLV Achieves Zero Orbital Debris Mission
The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) announced the successful completion of its PSLV Orbital Experimental Module-3 (POEM-3) mission, marking yet another milestone in space exploration. The mission, which concluded on January 1, 2024, saw the re-entry of the PSLV-C58/XPoSat with zero debris left in orbit, a remarkable feat in space technology.
The primary objective of the mission was to inject all satellites into their designated orbits before transforming the terminal stage of PSLV into the 3-axis stabilised platform, POEM-3. This innovative approach allowed for the execution of various technology demonstrations and scientific experiments on indigenous systems, with nine experimental payloads onboard.
Utilizing the POEM as a cost-effective platform, numerous academia, startups, and Non-Governmental Entities (NGEs) seized the opportunity to conduct experiments in space, ranging from electric thrusters to star-tracking systems. The incorporation of new features such as total avionics in single-chain configuration and advanced navigation algorithms showcased ISRO’s commitment to innovation in space exploration.
Moreover, the effective conduct of experiments was ensured through measures such as stabilizing body rates and controlled dumping of residual propellant, minimizing disturbances during passivation. The Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC) played a pivotal role in conceptualizing and realizing the POEM, leading to the successful execution of the mission.
ISRO’s dedication to providing a cost-effective orbital experiment platform underscores its commitment to advancing space exploration while ensuring sustainability. Recognizing the growing threat of space debris, ISRO reaffirms its commitment to mitigating this menace through the development of advanced tracking systems and responsible satellite deployment practices.
As space activities continue to evolve, ISRO remains at the forefront of innovation, safeguarding orbital environments for present and future space endeavors. The successful completion of the POEM-3 mission reflects ISRO’s unwavering pursuit of excellence in space exploration.
