Former Sarpanch’s Killing: Candlelight March Held in South Kashmir

SRINAGAR : In a heartfelt response to recent violent incidents, residents of South Kashmir held a candlelight march on Sunday evening to protest the killing of a former sarpanch and the attack on two tourists.
The peaceful demonstration saw the participation of senior citizens, shopkeepers, and members of the traders association in Kulgam. They gathered in the main town to denounce the killing of former sarpanch Aijaz Ahmad Sheikh and the attack on two tourists in Pahalgam, Anantnag.
Aijaz Ahmad Sheikh, a former sarpanch from Hirpora, Shopian, was critically injured in a terrorist attack on Saturday evening and later succumbed to his injuries in the hospital. The incident has sparked widespread condemnation across the region.
In a separate incident, two tourists from Jaipur, including a female, were injured in a terrorist attack in the Yanner area of Anantnag district. They were immediately taken to a hospital for advanced treatment.
Protesters in Kulgam expressed their collective grief and anger over these civilian killings. Holding candles, they marched through the town, emphasizing that such acts of violence are against the spirit of humanity and have no place in their society.
The civil society members called for an end to the violence and urged authorities to ensure the safety and security of all residents and visitors in the region. The peaceful nature of the protest highlighted the community’s desire for harmony and the restoration of peace in South Kashmir.
