Ahsan Mukhtar, Shaheena Shahbaz Clinch GCOE Annual Road Race Titles in Srinagar
Srinagar, May 09 (PTK): Government College of Education Srinagar on Saturday organised its Annual College Road Race 2026 for men and women students, witnessing enthusiastic participation from more than 90 students.
The women’s 5-kilometre race was flagged off by College Principal Seema Naz from Sher-i-Kashmir International Conference Centre at 6:30 AM, while the men’s 6-kilometre race commenced earlier from Gupkar Link Road. Both races concluded at Foreshore Road near Nishat Garden after passing through Gupkar Road and the Tulip Garden stretch.
In the women’s category, Shaheena Shahbaz of B.Ed 1st Semester secured first position with a timing of 35.5 minutes. Sabha Assad finished second with 40.15 minutes, while Uzma Shafi of the ECCE Department secured third place with a timing of 45 minutes.
In the men’s category, Ahsan Mukhtar Dar of UG 6th Semester emerged winner by completing the race in 25.5 minutes. Showkat of UG 4th Semester secured second place with 27.4 minutes, while Hyder, also from UG 4th Semester, finished third with 28.5 minutes.
A prize distribution ceremony was later held at Nishat, where trophies were awarded to the top three finishers and medals distributed among the first ten position holders by the Principal and senior faculty members.
Speaking on the occasion, Prof. Seema Naz highlighted the importance of sports and physical fitness in shaping the overall personality of students. She encouraged students to actively participate in sports activities throughout the year and stressed that such events promote discipline, teamwork and healthy competition.
She also underscored the importance of women’s participation in sports, stating that sports help empower women, build confidence and develop leadership qualities. The Principal further noted that involvement in sports and extracurricular activities plays a significant role in steering youth away from drug abuse and contributes towards building a healthier society.
Convenor College Sports Board Mohd Yasin Pir also addressed the participants and encouraged greater student participation in future sporting events organised by the college.
The event was organised by the Department of Physical Education under the supervision of Dr. Mohd Yasin Pir with support from Dr. Qazi Inaam and Dr. Daljeet Kour.
At the conclusion, the Principal expressed gratitude to the Health Department and Traffic Police for ensuring smooth conduct of the races.(PTK)
