Two militants killed in Anantnag, clashes erupt, restrictions imposed
SRINAGAR, JULY 25 (PTK): Two militants were killed in a gunfight with the security forces in Anantnag town of south Kashmir district on Wednesday.
A senior police official said two bodies of the militants have been recovered from the site of a gunfight in Mehmaan mohalla of Anantnag town. Adding that militants were identified as Adil Bhat of Sozan Kishtwar and Bin Yamin alias Bilal moulvi of Ghat Khudwani.
Earlier, police said that two Lashkar-e-Toiba militants were trapped in the gunfight that raged since early morning. An official said that forces launched a cordon-and-search-operation in the area following inputs about the presence of militants.
However reports said that, a policeman was injured by clashes after youth took to the streets in Lazibal, Kadipora and Chee area of Lal Chowk despite curbs and clashes with the forces.
A policeman sustained injuries after being hit by a stone in Chee area, said a report.
Meanwhile, restrictions were imposed in the town to thwart any protests in the town, all entry and exit points to Lal Chowk have been blocked with barricades.
Meanwhile internet services were suspended in south Kashmir’s Islamabad and Kulgam districts. However train services have also been suspended in south Kashmir as a precautionary measure.
“We have suspended train services in south Kashmir for security reasons,” a railway official said. However, trains continued to chug on Srinagar-Budgam in central Kashmir to Baramulla in north Kashmir as per schedule, officials said .
Police issued a statement regarding the Anantnag gunfight that took place early morning. They said the the joint patrol of security forces launched searches at Lal Chowk area in district Islamabad after it received credible leads about the presence of the militants inside a house.
The spokesperson said, “As the government forces advanced towards the suspect house, the militants hiding inside fired on the security forces, which was retaliated resulting in an encounter in which two militants were killed. Besides, no collateral damage occurred during the encounter.”
“On the basis of the incriminating materials seized, it is established that they belonged to proscribed militant organisation LeT; one of the slain militants was identified as Bilal Ahmad Dar alias Bin Yamin Dar son of Mohammad Yousuf Dar of Sofi Mohalla Khudwani Kulgam. The identity of the other militant is yet to be ascertained,” said police spokesperson in a statement.
“As per police records, Bilal alias Bin Yamin Dar was involved in series of militant activities,” the spokesman said. Police said that some arms and ammunition were recovered from the site of encounter. Police has registered a case and investigation has been initiated into the matter, said spokesperson. (PTK)
