Sarjan Barkati to File Nominations for Assembly Elections from Jail

SRINAGAR: Sarjan Barkati, a well-known figure since the 2016 civilian unrest, is set to file his nomination for the upcoming assembly elections from jail. His family members will submit the papers on his behalf today, representing the Janata Dal United (JDU) party, according to sources from the Press Trust of Kashmir.

Barkati has been in jail since August 2023. His wife was also arrested by the State Investigation Agency (SIA) in November 2023 in connection with a militancy funding case. Despite these circumstances, Barkati’s candidacy signals a significant development in the region’s political landscape.
