Ramadan Preparations Enliven Kashmir Markets

As the auspicious month of Ramadan (1445) 2024 draws near, the vibrant markets of Kashmir Valley, particularly in the bustling streets of Srinagar City, pulsate with a palpable sense of anticipation. Amidst the hustle and bustle, residents eagerly stock up on essentials, gearing up to embrace the forthcoming period of blessings.

Bedazzled with colorful decorations, the shops exude an air of festivity, while the tantalizing aroma of traditional delicacies permeates the atmosphere, fostering a sense of warmth and unity among shoppers.

From bakery delights to meaty delights, from garments to crockery, a steady stream of customers throngs the various establishments, diligently ticking off items from their Ramadan shopping lists.

However, amidst the preparations, a committee, spearheaded by Mirwaiz Kashmir Moulvi Umar Farooq, has been convened to adjudicate on the credibility of witness accounts pertaining to the sighting of the Holy Ramadan moon in Jammu and Kashmir. Comprising esteemed scholars and religious figures, including Maulvi Rehmatullah Mir Qasmi, Maulvi Ghulam Rasool Haami, and others, the committee aims to dispel any ambiguity surrounding the commencement of Ramadan, particularly in light of divergent opinions on last year’s moon sighting in the Himalayan region.

With the moon’s age exceeding 28 hours at the time of its anticipated sighting on March 11, the likelihood of its appearance on Monday is heightened, setting the stage for a crucial moment in the lunar calendar.

While the Ramadan crescent moon has already been sighted in Saudi Arabia, UAE, Kuwait, and Qatar, signaling the commencement of the holy month, countries such as Australia, Malaysia, Oman, the Philippines, Singapore, and Indonesia are slated to commence Ramadan 2024 on Tuesday, aligning with the global Muslim community in observance of this sacred period.

Amidst the fervor of Ramadan preparations and the deliberations over moon sightings, the kaleidoscope of activity in Kashmir’s markets serves as a poignant reminder of the significance of unity, faith, and communal solidarity during this blessed time.
