Mend roads across Kashmir to prevent road accidents: BJP
Expresses concern over rising road accidents in Jammu and Kashmir
Srinagar, Feb (PTK): BJP’ Kashmir unit Friday urged Lieutenant Governor led Administration to mend the roads in Kashmir stating that the roads have become death traps.
Party’s media in charge, Mazoor Bhat said it is disturbing that around 1000 people = have lost their lives in nearly 6000 road accidents in 2019 alone.
He said it is unfortunate that J&K has been ranked second in India in road accidents with an average of over 900 deaths every year. “All the major provisions of the road safety policy have been either overlooked or no sincere efforts were made to implement them in letter and spirit, Bhat said.
As per Bhat said the roads are battered after snow and rains and need to be fixed. There are potholes everywhere and the administration should gear up to repair the roads in Kashmir.
“On Sonwar-Pantha Chowk stretch there are many potholes that cause inconvenience to both the pedestrians and people driving on this road. Not only in Srinagar, but road conditions in other districts also present a grim picture,” he said.
He expressed anguish over the dilapidated roads in Srinagar saying the claims of smart city have been thrown into winds making people suffer.
As per him, instant fixing of roads to make them fit for traffic also follows the fact that the region being rough and hilly is prone to mishaps and therefore fatalities.
“Every year road accidents wreak havoc in the region as small and heavy vehicles are engulfed by gorges and ravines. Unfortunately, the calamities do not strike due to weather-beaten or narrow roads alone,” Bhat said.
He said the overall road safety measures observed by the people here are fewer compared to the standards in place outside J&K.
“In JK especially in valley there are blind curves. Vehicles colliding, skidding and turning turtle are often seen, for which people have to pay the price,” he said.
He appealed the Governor led administration to review the status of roads in Kashmir and issued orders for road macdamization and repair the roads on priority basis.(PTK)
