Mehbooba Mufti attacks centre over closure of mosques in Kashmir

SRINAGAR, OCT 02 (PTK): Former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Mehbooba Mufti on Saturday accused the central government of bias, saying stopping people from offering prayers in mosques and dargahs in Kashmir shows its “disrespect” for the sentiments of the majority community.

The Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president was reacting to the continued closure of some mosques and shrines in Srinagar city due to a spike in COVID-19 cases.

“Preventing people from offering prayers at mosques and religious places in Kashmir shows the Indian government’s disrespect for the sentiments of the majority community. Especially at a time when parks and public places are open and there are countless crowds throughout the day. The events are organized. Bias (sic), the PDP president wrote on Twitter.

The closure of some mosques and shrines in Srinagar, including the Jamia Masjid in Nowhatta, saw a sharp rise in the number of novel coronavirus cases in the city recently. (PTK)
