Intense to Moderate Western Disturbances to Hit Jammu and Kashmir from Saturday Night
The meteorological department has issued a forecast indicating an upcoming spell of inclement weather in Jammu and Kashmir, starting from Saturday night and extending till the afternoon of February 21. According to officials, a series of moderate to intense Western Disturbances are expected to affect the region, resulting in widespread precipitation.
In the Kashmir Valley, conditions are expected to be partly to generally cloudy with the possibility of light snow at isolated higher reaches starting late Saturday night. As the disturbances intensify, the region can anticipate generally cloudy weather with light to moderate rain and snow at many places on February 18.
From February 19 to 20, there is a likelihood of light to moderate rain and snow across most areas, with the possibility of heavy snowfall over middle and higher reaches of several districts. The situation is expected to gradually improve from February 21 onwards.
For the Jammu division, there is a forecast of light rain and snow at many places on Sunday, with intermittent precipitation expected on February 19-20, along with thunder and lightning in plains. Higher reaches may experience heavier snowfall during this period.
The MeT office has issued an advisory cautioning about potential road closures in higher reaches and important passes due to the weather system. Travelers are advised to plan accordingly, while farmers are urged to take necessary precautions regarding irrigation and drainage in orchards and fields.
Additionally, a significant drop in day temperatures is anticipated during this period. As for current temperatures, several areas including Srinagar, Qazigund, Pahalgam, and Kupwara recorded temperatures below normal for this time of the year, while Gulmarg observed temperatures above normal.
In Jammu, temperatures remained below normal, indicating the overall impact of the upcoming weather disturbances. Banihal, Batote, and Bhaderwah also recorded varying temperatures, reflecting the diverse weather conditions across the region.
