Home Ministry Empowers States and UTs to Act Against SIMI Under UAPA
Press Trust of Kashmir
The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has delegated powers to all states and Union Territory administrations to take action against the banned Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).
This decision comes a week after the MHA renewed the ban on SIMI as an ‘unlawful association’ under UAPA for the next five years. The MHA order directs that powers under sections 7 and 8 of UAPA, previously held by the Central Government, will now be exercised by state governments and UT administrations in relation to the banned organizations.
The move underscores a shift in authority, allowing local entities to play a more active role in combating activities associated with SIMI. Stay informed as this delegation of powers marks a notable step in enhancing regional autonomy in addressing security concerns.
