Gulmarg Avalanche: 1 Skier Killed, 7 Rescued, Rescue Operation Concludes

 

Srinagar, Feb 22: Tragedy struck the picturesque slopes of Gulmarg as an avalanche on Thursday claimed the life of a Russian female skier while seven others, including a local tourist guide, were successfully rescued.

Official told News Agency Press Trust of Kashmir that, the avalanche struck Khilan Marg on Afarwat Peak, trapping seven foreign skiers and their guide. Prompt response from authorities led to a massive rescue operation, utilizing helicopters and chair lifts to locate and extract the trapped individuals.

Despite the valiant efforts, one life was lost in the ordeal. However, the remaining seven skiers, including the guide, were safely rescued from the snow-covered terrain.

Secretary of the Sports Council Jammu and Kashmir confirmed the safety of all Khelo India athletes, reassuring the public amidst the rescue efforts.

With the rescue operation now concluded, the slopes of Gulmarg stand silent, reminding all adventurers of the unpredictable nature of the mountains.
