New Delhi, Aug 14: In recognition of their outstanding contributions to public safety, the government announced on Wednesday that 1,037 police personnel from various central and state forces will be awarded service medals on the eve of Independence Day.

The Union Home Ministry’s statement outlined that 214 of these personnel will receive bravery medals, which include a prestigious President’s Medal for Gallantry (PMG) and 231 Medals for Gallantry (GM). The GM awards also extend to four firefighters and one civil defence personnel.

The Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) emerged as the top recipient of bravery medals, securing 52 honors, followed by the Jammu and Kashmir Police with 31 medals. Other notable mentions include 17 awards each for police personnel from Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra, 15 from Chhattisgarh, and 12 from Madhya Pradesh.

The lone PMG, the highest police accolade for bravery, has been conferred upon Telangana Police Head Constable Chaduvu Yadaiah. He displayed extraordinary courage in apprehending two notorious chain snatchers and arms traffickers on July 25, 2022. Despite being viciously attacked and repeatedly stabbed by the criminals, Yadaiah managed to keep them under control, an act of valor that left him hospitalized for 17 days.

In addition to the bravery awards, the government will also confer 94 President’s Police Medals for Distinguished Service and 729 Medals for Meritorious Service. These honors are awarded biannually, with the other occasion being Republic Day.

The PMG and PPMG are awarded to individuals who display conspicuous gallantry in protecting life and property or in preventing crime. The President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service is reserved for those with an exceptional record in police service, while the Police Medal for Meritorious Service recognizes valuable service marked by dedication and resourcefulness.
