Forest Fire Ignites Landmines Along LoC in J&K’s Poonch, Army Averts Disaster

In a concerning incident near the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir’s Poonch district, a forest fire inadvertently triggered landmine explosions on Thursday. Authorities reported that the landmines, strategically placed as part of the anti-infiltration obstacle system, were set off by the blaze that engulfed the Rakhaveli forest area under the Poonch police station limits on Wednesday evening.

Fortunately, despite the intensity of the explosions, there were no casualties reported. Swift action by the Army, which conducted firefighting operations for several hours, contained the blaze and prevented any further escalation of the situation. This incident underscores the intricate challenges faced by security forces in maintaining border security, where natural elements can unexpectedly interact with man-made defenses.

The safety and security of civilians and military personnel remain paramount, especially in volatile regions like Jammu and Kashmir. While the cause of the forest fire is yet to be determined, it serves as a stark reminder of the delicate balance between nature and security measures in border areas. Authorities are likely to conduct thorough investigations to assess the extent of damage and implement measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
