Flood In Kupwara: 336 families in Kupwara district relocated to safer places, 5 villages fully inundated at Handwara, several bridges and other infrastructure projects damaged

KUPWARA : The water level has crossed the danger mark and floods stand notified by the concerned Executive Engineers Irrigation and Flood Control in their respective jurisdictions. As many as 336 families from the flood-affected areas of Kupwara district have been relocated to safer places on Monday by District Administration.
198 families have been evacuated from Handwara tehsil alone.
51 villages of the district have been partly inundated in the District and 5 villages of Handwara have been fully inundated by the floods.
Floods have damaged some major infrastructure assets which include Shumriyal Bridge, khumryal Bridge(side walls), Shatmuqam bridge, Sohipora- Hayhama bridge, Farkyan bridge, shumryal- Gundajhanger road, cut off due to scouring, 2 RDD buildings at Kupwara and AD Handicrafts office buildingm A breach in Doban Kachama dam. Besides, Sopore Kupwara national highway was closed as road got inundated at Kawari.
Meanwhile all the border roads have been closed due to fresh snowfall and avalanche threat.
District Administration has said that there is no need to panic as all the men and machinery have been pressed in to take necessary rescue, relief and restoration measures. Water level is continuously monitored and evacuation measures are underway in the flood prone areas.
21 Shelter homes have been established across the District. The general Public has been advised to approach District Control Room headed by Additional Deputy Commissioner/Assistant Commissioner Revenue and Tehsil Level control Rooms, headed by the concerned Tehsildars, for any assistance.
Meanwhile class work remained suspended in the schools of the District today.
Deputy Commissioner Kupwara Ms. Ayushi Sudan has directed for immediate restoration measures to connect Shumryal and Gundjahanger villages.
Deputy Commissioner Kupwara Ms. Ayushi Sudan accompanied by other officers, during the day undertook extensive tour of the affected areas, where she took stock of flood situation and directed concerned to focus on evacuation measures so that lives are saved. Later on, she took review of the flood situation in a meeting of District Disaster Management Authority and passed directions to all the concerned involved in the rescue, relief and restoration works.
