Er Rashid’s Bail Not to Serve People of North Kashmir but to Get Votes: Omar Abdullah

Srinagar, September 10: National Conference (NC) Vice President Omar Abdullah expressed skepticism over the bail granted to Awami Itehad Party (AIP) leader Er Rashid by a Delhi court. Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Omar remarked that the bail seemed aimed more at securing votes than serving the people of North Kashmir.

“I feel sorry for the people of Baramulla,” Omar said. “This bail is not about serving the people of North Kashmir, but about getting votes. After the elections, Er Rashid will likely be lodged back in Tihar again. We’ll have to wait and see what impact this decision has on the people of North Kashmir.”

When asked about Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chief Mehbooba Mufti’s claim that Er Rashid is a proxy for the BJP, Omar responded that AIP should answer those allegations. He further urged the public to be cautious about the BJP’s political strategies, warning that a vote for AIP, the People’s Conference Party (PCP), or the Apni Party would ultimately benefit the BJP.

“If people want a BJP government in Jammu and Kashmir, then they should support AIP, PCP, and the Apni Party,” Omar added.

Regarding the recent remarks made by former Congress chief Vikar Rasool against the NC in Banihal, Omar hinted that the Congress leadership had taken notice of the comments, suggesting that was sufficient for now.

Omar also raised concerns about jailed cleric Sarjan Barkati being fielded against him in elections, stating, “I don’t know why jailed people are being pitched against me. I am confident that the people will see through these designs and prevent any attempt to weaken my position.”

In response to Omar’s comments, BJP spokesperson Altaf Thakur downplayed the significance of Er Rashid’s bail. “Bail or no bail for Er Rashid doesn’t matter for the BJP. If this decision irritates anyone, it’s Omar Abdullah,” Thakur said.

This development comes amid a heated political climate in Jammu and Kashmir, where various parties are strategizing for upcoming elections. The grant of bail to Er Rashid has triggered political reactions from multiple fronts, reflecting the deep divisions and complex alliances in the region.
